Welcome to the Village of St James South Elmham, Suffolk

Volunteering is what makes St James a true community

St James Village Hall is the village volunteering hub – a place where villagers get together, meet new people and help each other out.

The Z Team

There are so many ways to volunteer in our St James community, but one of the most successful is ‘The Z team’. Although it started as a way for people with skills to help maintain the village hall, it now does so much more. The team holds ‘planning meetings’ in a local pub and it’s worth joining for that alone!

The Z Team offers a range of services. They help keep the churchyard tidy. They have laid foundations for a new storage hut. They have renovated an allotment greenhouse. They are smartening up the stage area and have painted the hut.

Now their services are available to people in the village who need some extra help with DIY or gardening. Just contact Dave. The only thing excluded is electrical work.

Helping to maintain the Village Hall

People living in St James have found many ways to help maintain and improve our Hall. Here Ruth is using our new safe scaffolding tower to rehang curtains, but between us we have so many skills to use...

  • Researching and buying new comfortable upholstered chairs
  • Helping to renovate the Victorian village pump
  • Pruning hedges and trees
  • Re-establishing a walk way to the rear green
  • Clearing an allotment
  • Recovering a pelmet above the stage
  • Updating our Handbook
  • Making a new compost box from pallet wood
  • Installing a key safe to make the Hall more accessible

Everyone has something to offer.

Volunteers make events successful

One of the best ways to volunteer is to help out at a village event. Our bigger events happen every 2 months, but we also have regular small get-togethers.

There’s a monthly Coffee Caravan every third Thursday in the month where cakes are always welcomed. Help setting up for the bi-monthly ‘Crafternoons’ is another way to help.

For the bigger events like the Village Christmas Lunch or band nights, help setting up tables, chairs and lighting is always needed as well as selling tickets, running fundraisers and making food.

St James is a village renowned for its cooks so volunteers to peel, bake, carve and serve are always needed.
